Business is not an exclusive preserve of the elderly. As a matter of fact, youthfulness can be a strong advantage in terms of agility, sharpness of mind, and most importantly, the availability of time to learn and grow in experience. Also, in a world where there are numerous distractions that can lead to a waste of life, business can keep the youth active and busy. It is said that ‘an idle mind is the devil’s workshop’. As an adolescent, you must always keep yourself occupied in order not to allow any influence from peers who have an unserious, unambitious outlook upon life and can easily misdirect your own life. You must strive to always make productive use of your time, age and youthful energy.

It may seem very convenient depending on your parents for almost everything during your infancy, but as you grow older through youth, you do not want to keep asking your parents for every penny you need; do you? Moreover, as a parent I can assure you that your parents will be very much impressed to see you strive towards independence, and will consequently be encouraged to give you the needed support. Always try to think creatively and constructively about things that can position you for, and propel you towards, financial independence. You are being parented by your father and mother today; there will come a time when you have to give back to them too, while also looking at your own future family. You do not want to be caught unawares. Do not live the lie of “I am still too young and I have all the time on my side”.

To be successful in the business you do, you need your parents’ blessings. It is therefore important to listen to advice and guidance, for in business good counsel is required for success. Chose a venture that you and your parents can be proud of; not illegitimate, dishonorable ones.

To do business as a youth, it is also important that you try to locate your fellow youths who are involved in business so that you can learn from them. Your young mind helps you to learn faster. Rather than idle it away or waste it on things that do not add any value to you in the long run, engage other like-minded peers towards the combination of your faculties and skills for fruitful ends. For instance, instead of socializing just for the sake of it on social media, you can explore the legitimate means of using your access to the internet to make money. Youtube is a good example of a vital platform on which to learn skills and also make money.

There are network organizations around the world that support youth entrepreneurs between the ages of 18-35 to start, grow and sustain businesses to full success. For instance, there is the YOUTH BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL which develops and scales new solutions around the critical challenges faced by youth entrepreneurs. Youths are hereby urged to boldly take a bold step and engage in business, since there are already existing channels and systems to inspire, enable and empower them. As a youth, you just need to be decisive, determined, hardworking, patient and focused.

Finally, you have to be ready to learn and give your teachers and coaches the needed cooperation as they guide you. Treat your teachers with the respect they deserve and always pay attention to details, especially about business. Bear in mind that you can learn from anybody in the business world, provided that what you are being taught is legitimate.

REMEMBER: Business can be learnt and done alongside your formal education and other engagements, and your youthfulness can be a crucial advantage.
