HANDICAPPED PERSONS IN BUSINESS
HANDICAPPED PERSONS IN BUSINESS
The major human resource in business is the mind. Your mental fitness, your thinking faculty and other components that constitute the inner man are more fundamental to your humanity than the functionality and shape of your physique.
Physically challenged or disabled persons have as much place in business as those without any physical handicaps. As a matter of fact, nature actually works in such a mysterious way that it endows people who are physically challenged with special talents and abilities to make up for their physical drawbacks. Therefore, while the disabled among us are encouraged to not see their disabilities as a red card from the business stage, those of us who are privileged to have all our body parts functioning to full capacity are enjoined to never look down on the handicapped.
The right and dignity of the physically challenged is so important that today, there is an International Day of Persons with Disabilities set aside and promoted by the United Nations since 1992. On this day, December 3 of every year, people living with disabilities are celebrated for their achievements and encouraged to dream and pursue their dreams like the rest of us.
As someone living with one form of disability or another, you do not have to consider yourself limited. For instance, there are sports for people with different forms of disability today. Being physically challenged does not mean that your life is not complete. Your humanity is defined more by your spirit being, therefore, even though you look physically incomplete, bear in mind that in the spirit you are a complete person. Remember that when God created us, He said we are complete in Him.
There are different businesses, usually self-employing ones, which people with disabilities can do. Some of such businesses include dog breeding, car repair, photography, ICT and a whole lot of other ventures. Technology has also made it possible for people to trade online from the comfort of their homes. It is actually common for people with disabilities to become self-employed, as their situation motivates them to be self-reliant. We humans all yearn for self-dependence, but some of us usually do not put in the needed effort for fear of the unknown. The tendency for physically challenged people to become self-employed is a way of turning a disadvantage into an advantage. Rob Smith, founder of UK-based business enterprise, Active Hands, said: “without my accident, I probably wouldn’t have started my own business”.
Governments, organizations and individuals also make special provisions for, and have a tendency to favor, people with disabilities. As a handicapped person, you can more easily access funds for small business ownership. Many countries set aside business grants and soft loans for people living with disabilities. There are also a lot of non-governmental organizations’ with different schemes, programs and initiatives geared towards assisting the physically challenged towards financial independence. Those can be searched for on the internet.
It is a fact that handicapped people are not disadvantaged in any way when it comes to doing business, what with the variety of business opportunities out there. YOUR PHYSICAL DISABILITY IS JUST WHAT IT IS, NOT A CONDEMNATION FROM THE WORLD OF BUSINESS.
